How to Clone Your Website

Backups & Restore4 min read·

This article explains how to create an exact copy (clone) of your website using Web60's backup system.

Cloning your website means creating an identical copy. You might need this to test changes safely, create a development version, or move your site to a different location.

Step 1: Create a Fresh Backup

Before cloning, create a current backup of your website:

  1. Log into your Web60 portal
  2. Find your website in the dashboard
  3. Click on "Backups" in the left menu
  4. Click "Create Manual Backup"
  5. Wait for the backup to complete (usually 2-5 minutes)

This ensures you're cloning the most recent version of your site. For detailed backup instructions, see How to Create Manual Backups.

Step 2: Set Up Your Clone Destination

You need somewhere to put your cloned website. This could be:

  • A new Web60 account with a different domain
  • A subdomain (like test.yourdomain.ie)
  • A temporary domain provided by Web60

If you're cloning to test changes, contact Web60 support to set up a staging area.

Step 3: Download Your Backup Files

Get a copy of your backup files:

  1. In your Web60 portal, go to "Backups"
  2. Find your latest backup
  3. Click "Download" next to the backup
  4. Save the backup file to your computer

The backup includes your WordPress files, database, and all content. See Downloading Your Backup Files for more details.

Step 4: Restore to Your Clone Location

  1. Access your clone destination (new account or staging area)
  2. Go to the "Backups" section
  3. Click "Restore from Backup"
  4. Upload the backup file you downloaded
  5. Click "Start Restore"
  6. Wait for the process to finish (typically 5-10 minutes)

Step 5: Update Your Cloned Site Settings

After restoration, update these settings in your cloned site:

  1. Log into WordPress admin on your cloned site
  2. Go to Settings → General
  3. Update "WordPress Address" and "Site Address" to match your clone's domain
  4. Update any hardcoded links in your content
  5. Check that images and links work correctly

Your website clone is now ready. Remember that the clone is a snapshot from when you created the backup. Any changes made to your original site after that won't appear in the clone.

If you're still stuck with cloning your website, contact Web60 support through your portal. Include details about what you want to achieve with the clone.

FAQ

Q: How long does it take to clone a website?

A: The entire process typically takes 15-30 minutes, depending on your website size. Most of this time is waiting for backup creation and restoration to complete.

Q: Will cloning affect my live website?

A: No, cloning creates a separate copy without affecting your original website. Your visitors won't notice anything during the cloning process.

Q: Can I clone my website to a different hosting company?

A: Yes, you can download your backup files and restore them elsewhere. However, the exact steps will depend on your new hosting provider's backup system.

Q: Do I need technical skills to clone my website?

A: No special technical skills are required. The Web60 backup system handles the complex parts automatically. You just need to follow the steps and wait for each process to finish.

Q: What's included in a cloned website?

A: Everything - your WordPress files, database, themes, plugins, content, images, and settings. The clone is identical to your original site at the time of backup.

Q: How often should I update my cloned website?

A: This depends on your needs. If you're using it for testing, update it before making major changes. For development sites, weekly or monthly updates are common.

Q: Can I clone just part of my website?

A: No, Web60's cloning process copies your entire website. You cannot clone individual pages or sections separately.
