How We Ensure 99.9% Uptime

SmartHost & Web604 min read·

This article explains the technical systems that keep your Web60 website running 99.9% of the time.

Multiple Server Locations

Your website runs on servers in multiple Irish data centres. If one server has problems, your website automatically switches to a backup server. This happens within seconds, so visitors won't notice any interruption.

The servers are located in Dublin and Cork, connected by high-speed fibre networks. Each location has its own power supply and internet connections. For more details about our infrastructure, see Data Centre Locations and Infrastructure.

24/7 Automated Monitoring

Computer systems check your website every 60 seconds. If your website stops responding, these systems immediately alert our technical team and begin switching your website to a backup server.

The monitoring checks:

  • Website loading speed
  • Database connections
  • Server memory usage
  • Hard drive space
  • Network connectivity

This happens around the clock, including weekends and bank holidays.

Daily Automatic Backups

Web60 creates a complete backup of your website every day at 3 AM Irish time. These backups are stored in a separate location from your main website. If something goes wrong with your website, we can restore it from the most recent backup within 15 minutes.

You can also create your own backups anytime through your Web60 portal. Learn more in Understanding Automatic Backups.

Hardware Redundancy

Each server has duplicate components for critical parts:

  • Two power supplies
  • Multiple hard drives (RAID configuration)
  • Backup network cards
  • Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS)

If any component fails, the backup component takes over immediately. Failed parts are replaced within 4 hours.

Network Redundancy

Your website connects to the internet through multiple network providers. If one internet connection fails, traffic automatically routes through the other connections. This prevents your website from going offline due to network problems.

Proactive Maintenance

Server updates and maintenance happen during scheduled windows (typically 2-4 AM Irish time). Your website moves to backup servers during maintenance, so it stays online. You'll receive email notification 48 hours before any planned maintenance.

Security updates for WordPress and server software install automatically. This prevents security vulnerabilities that could cause downtime.

What Counts Against Uptime

The 99.9% uptime guarantee covers:

  • Server hardware failures
  • Network connectivity issues
  • Power outages at data centres
  • Software crashes on our servers

It doesn't cover:

  • Planned maintenance (notified in advance)
  • Problems with your domain name provider
  • Issues caused by custom code or plugins you install

For full details about what's covered, see Service Level Agreements and Uptime Guarantees.

If you're still stuck or notice your website is down, contact our support team immediately through your Web60 portal or by phone. We'll investigate and resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Q: Do I get notified when there's downtime?

A: Yes, you'll receive an email alert if your website is down for more than 5 minutes. You'll get another email when it's back online.

Q: Can I check my website's uptime history?

A: Yes, log into your Web60 portal and go to the "Uptime Reports" section. This shows your website's availability over the past 12 months.
