Website Costs Are the Biggest Myth Stopping Irish Businesses Going Online

I sat across from a Kilkenny craft brewery owner last month. He wanted a website. Nothing complicated. A few pages about his beers, opening hours, a contact form. The quote from a local agency? EUR 4,500 upfront, plus EUR 800 a year for hosting and maintenance.

He looked at me and said: "I thought that's just what websites cost."

It is not. Not anymore. And the fact that he believed it, that thousands of business owners across Ireland still believe it, is the single biggest myth keeping real businesses offline in 2026.

Where the EUR 3,000 to EUR 5,000 Myth Comes From

This myth has three parents.

First: agencies who benefit from it. Web design agencies in Ireland typically charge between EUR 80 and EUR 125 per hour [1]. A standard five to ten page business website runs somewhere between EUR 2,000 and EUR 5,000 before you even think about ongoing costs. Agencies have no incentive to tell you there is a cheaper way. As we have explored before, what looks like affordable website design often costs businesses far more than the sticker price suggests.

Second: outdated word of mouth. If your accountant, your brother-in-law, or your business mentor built a website five years ago, they probably did pay thousands. In 2021, that was the going rate. But the market has shifted fundamentally since then, and most of the people giving advice have not kept up.

Third: confusion between what a website costs to build and what it costs to maintain. Agencies bundle design, development, and a year of hosting into one headline figure. Then renewal hits. Suddenly you are paying EUR 600 to EUR 1,500 a year just for hosting and updates [1]. The real cost is not the website. It is everything that comes after.

What Has Actually Changed in 2026

Here is what nobody told that brewery owner. WordPress, the same platform that powers roughly 43% of all websites on the internet according to W3Techs [2], can now be set up and designed by AI in under 60 seconds. Not a basic template with placeholder text. A professional, fully designed business website.

The AI website builder market is growing at somewhere between 20% and 25% annually, according to Precedence Research [3]. That kind of growth does not happen because the technology is a gimmick. It happens because it works.

AI removes the one barrier that kept non-technical business owners from building their own sites: the skills gap. You do not need to understand CSS, PHP, or responsive design. You describe your business, and AI handles the rest. The result is a site that looks and performs as well as what an agency would deliver, because WordPress themes and design standards have matured to the point where the platform does the heavy lifting.

The Real Numbers: EUR 60 Versus EUR 5,000

This is not a stripped-down landing page. For EUR 60 a year, Web60's all-inclusive managed WordPress hosting gives you design, hosting, SSL, automatic nightly backups, server-level security, and privacy-first analytics. No hidden fees. No renewal surprises. No per-feature charges.

Compare that to the agency model. You pay EUR 2,000 to EUR 5,000 upfront. Then EUR 600 to EUR 1,500 a year for hosting, maintenance, and the privilege of asking someone else to update your own contact details at EUR 75 to EUR 150 per hour.

Over three years, an agency website costs somewhere in the region of EUR 5,000 to EUR 10,000. A Web60 site costs EUR 180. For a professional WordPress site on enterprise-grade Irish infrastructure with Nginx, Redis caching, and everything managed for you. That means pages load fast, your data stays in Ireland, and you are not paying someone else to change your phone number on your own website.

The maths is not subtle. And the quality gap that used to justify the price difference? It barely exists anymore. As website plans in Ireland have shown, the era of paying thousands for a standard business site is simply over.

What the Myth Is Actually Costing You

Here is what happens while you are putting off building a website because you think it requires thousands you do not have. Your competitors are already online. They are showing up in Google searches. They are getting calls from customers who never knew your business existed.

The Eurostat Digitalisation report found that only around 58% of small and medium enterprises across the EU have reached even a basic level of digital presence [4]. That means four in ten are still behind. For Ireland, where the CSO recorded roughly 309,000 active businesses in its most recent enterprise data [5], the numbers suggest tens of thousands of viable businesses sitting offline.

Consider a typical pattern we see: a local firm puts off building a website for two years because they were quoted EUR 4,000 and could not justify the spend. In those two years, a competitor with even a basic online presence captures the local search traffic. The business that waited did not save EUR 4,000. They lost substantially more in missed enquiries and invisible customers.

That is the real cost of the myth. Not the money you did not spend. The revenue you never saw.

The Honest Caveat

I want to be fair about this. A EUR 60 a year AI-built WordPress site is not the right answer for every business. If you need a complex custom e-commerce platform with bespoke integrations, inventory management tied to a warehouse system, and custom checkout flows, that is genuine development work. Enterprise managed hosting providers exist for that workload, and they earn their fees.

But that is not most businesses. Most businesses need a professional online presence that loads fast, ranks on Google, and tells potential customers what they do and how to reach them. For that, the agency model is the expensive option, not the quality option.

There is also a reality worth acknowledging: even with AI doing the design, you will want to spend an hour or two refining your content, tweaking your wording, adding your own photos. The AI gets you 90% of the way in 60 seconds. That last 10% is yours, and it should be, because nobody describes your business better than you do.

The Myth Is the Only Barrier Left

Five years ago, there were three barriers to getting online: cost, skills, and time. AI has removed the skills barrier. Platforms that deliver a professional WordPress site with everything included for EUR 60 a year have removed the cost barrier. The 60-second setup has removed the time barrier.

The only thing left is the myth. The lingering belief that a "proper" website requires thousands of euro and a professional designer. It does not. Not in 2026. WordPress is the platform, AI is the builder, and the business owner who knows their business best is the person who should be describing it.

The era of the EUR 5,000 website is over. The business owners who work that out first are the ones who get found first.
