How to Add Social Media Feeds

Building Your Website4 min read·

This article shows you how to add live social media feeds from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to your WordPress website.

Choose Your Social Media Platform

Decide which social media accounts you want to display on your website. Most businesses choose one or two platforms rather than showing feeds from every social account. Pick the platforms where you post regularly and have engaging content.

Install a Social Media Feed Plugin

  1. Log into your WordPress admin dashboard
  2. Click Plugins in the left menu, then Add New
  3. Search for "Smash Balloon" - this plugin works well for most social media feeds
  4. Click Install Now next to the plugin for your chosen platform (Custom Facebook Feed, Instagram Feed, or Custom Twitter Feeds)
  5. Click Activate once installation finishes

For help with plugins, see our guide on how to set up WordPress plugins.

Connect Your Social Media Account

  1. Go to the new plugin menu item in your WordPress dashboard (it will be named after your chosen platform)
  2. Click Configure or Settings
  3. Click Connect Account or similar button
  4. Log into your social media account when prompted
  5. Give permission for the plugin to access your posts
  6. Your account should now show as "Connected"

Add the Feed to Your Website

You can add your social media feed to any page or post:

  1. Edit the page where you want the feed to appear
  2. Click the + button to add a new block
  3. Search for your social media platform name (like "Instagram" or "Facebook")
  4. Click on the social media block to add it
  5. The feed should appear automatically if your account is connected
  6. Use the block settings to adjust how many posts show and the layout style

You can also add feeds to your sidebar or footer using WordPress widgets. Go to Appearance > Widgets and look for your social media widget.

Customize Your Feed Display

Most social media feed plugins let you control:

  • Number of posts to show
  • Layout (grid, list, or carousel)
  • Post size and spacing
  • Whether to show captions, dates, or likes
  • Colors to match your website design

Access these settings through the plugin's main settings page or when editing the block on your page.

Test Your Feed

Check that your social media feed loads properly by viewing your website. The feed should show your recent posts and update automatically when you post new content. If posts aren't appearing, check that your social media account is public and that you've connected the right account.

If you're still stuck, contact Web60 support through your account dashboard and we'll help you get your social media feeds working properly.

FAQ

Q: Do social media feeds slow down my website?

A: Well-coded social media plugins shouldn't significantly slow your site. However, showing too many posts or large images can affect loading speed.

Q: Will my feed update automatically when I post new content?

A: Yes, most plugins check for new posts every few hours and update your website feed automatically. Some plugins let you adjust how often this happens.

Q: Can I show feeds from multiple social media accounts?

A: Yes, you can install separate plugins for different platforms and display multiple feeds on the same page or different pages.

Q: What happens if I make my social media account private?

A: Private accounts won't display feeds on your website. Your social media account needs to be public for the feed to work.

Q: Can I filter which posts appear in my feed?

A: Many plugins let you exclude posts with certain hashtags or keywords, or only show posts that include specific hashtags.

Q: Do I need a business social media account to add feeds?

A: No, personal accounts work fine as long as they're public. However, business accounts often provide better integration options.

Q: Can visitors click through to my social media posts?

A: Yes, most social media feed plugins make posts clickable so visitors can view the full post on your social media platform.
