Configuring Domain Security Settings

Domain Management4 min read·

This article explains how to configure SSL certificates and security settings for your domain on Web60.

1. Access Your Domain Settings

Log into your Web60 account and navigate to the Domains section. Click on the domain name you want to secure. You'll see several tabs including SSL/Security.

2. Enable SSL Certificate

SSL certificates encrypt data between your website and visitors. Web60 automatically provides free SSL certificates for all domains.

Click the SSL/Security tab. You'll see your certificate status - it should show "Active" with a green tick. If it shows "Pending" or "Failed", click the "Regenerate SSL" button and wait 10-15 minutes.

The certificate covers both www.yourdomain.ie and yourdomain.ie versions of your site.

3. Force HTTPS Redirects

This setting automatically redirects visitors from http:// to https:// versions of your pages.

In the SSL/Security section, find "Force HTTPS Redirect" and toggle it to "On". This ensures all traffic uses the secure connection.

Note: Only enable this after confirming your SSL certificate is active. Otherwise visitors may see security warnings.

4. Configure Security Headers

Security headers protect against common web attacks. In the Security Settings area, you'll find these options:

HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS): Forces browsers to use HTTPS for future visits. Enable this after HTTPS is working properly.

Content Security Policy: Prevents malicious scripts from running. Leave this disabled unless you understand web development, as it can break website functionality.

X-Frame-Options: Stops your site being embedded in other websites' frames. Enable this to prevent clickjacking attacks.

5. Set Up Domain Privacy

Domain privacy hides your personal information from public WHOIS databases. In Ireland, this protects your business address and contact details from being publicly visible.

Find "Domain Privacy Protection" and toggle it to "On". This replaces your details with generic proxy information in public records.

For more information about managing domain privacy, see Managing Domain Privacy Settings.

6. Verify Security Configuration

After making changes, test your website:

  1. Visit your website using http:// - it should redirect to https://
  2. Check for a padlock icon in your browser's address bar
  3. Click the padlock to verify the SSL certificate is valid

If you encounter issues with SSL certificates, see our guide on SSL Certificate Not Working.

7. Monitor Domain Security

Check your SSL certificate expiry date monthly. Web60 automatically renews certificates, but monitoring helps catch any issues early.

Your certificate information shows the issue date and expiry date. Certificates typically renew 30 days before expiration.

FAQ

Q: How long does SSL activation take?

A: SSL certificates usually activate within 10-15 minutes. Domain validation certificates can take up to 24 hours if there are DNS issues.

Q: Why does my browser show "Not Secure" warnings?

A: This happens when some page content loads over HTTP instead of HTTPS. Check that all images, scripts, and links use HTTPS URLs or relative paths.

Q: Can I use my own SSL certificate?

A: Web60 automatically provides free SSL certificates from Let's Encrypt. You cannot upload custom certificates, but the provided certificates work for all standard business needs.

Q: What happens if I disable HTTPS redirect by mistake?

A: Your site will still work over HTTPS, but won't automatically redirect HTTP traffic. Simply re-enable the HTTPS redirect setting to fix this.

Q: Does domain privacy affect my website's functionality?

A: No, domain privacy only hides your contact information from public WHOIS lookups. It doesn't affect how your website works or loads.

Q: How do I check if my SSL certificate is working properly?

A: Visit your website and look for a padlock icon in the address bar. Click it to see certificate details. Your browser should show the connection as secure.
