This article covers how to add custom widgets to your WordPress website's sidebar, footer, and other widget areas.
What Are WordPress Widgets
Widgets are small blocks of content that appear in specific areas of your website, like the sidebar or footer. They can display recent posts, contact information, social media links, or custom text.
WordPress comes with built-in widgets, but you can also create custom ones to match your business needs.
Finding Your Widget Areas
- Log into your WordPress admin dashboard
- Click "Appearance" in the left menu
- Click "Widgets"
- You'll see available widget areas (like "Sidebar", "Footer") on the right side of the screen
The number and names of widget areas depend on your theme. Most themes have at least a sidebar and footer area.
Adding a Text Widget
Text widgets let you add custom content like business hours, contact details, or announcements.
- In the Widgets screen, look for "Text" in the available widgets list
- Click and drag the Text widget to your chosen widget area (like "Sidebar")
- Click the dropdown arrow on the widget to expand it
- Add a title (like "Contact Us" or "Opening Hours")
- Type your content in the text box
- Click "Save"
Your text widget will now appear on your website in that area.
Adding an Image Widget
- Drag the "Image" widget to your chosen widget area
- Click "Add Image"
- Choose an image from your media library or upload a new one
- Add alt text (important for accessibility)
- Add a caption if needed
- Click "Add to Widget"
- Click "Save"
Creating a Custom HTML Widget
HTML widgets let you add custom code, like Google Maps, social media feeds, or special formatting.
- Drag the "Custom HTML" widget to your widget area
- Add a title if you want one to appear
- Paste your HTML code in the content box
- Click "Save"
Warning: Only add HTML code from trusted sources. Bad code can break your website.
Removing Widgets
To remove a widget:
- Go to Appearance > Widgets
- Click the widget you want to remove
- Click "Delete" at the bottom of the widget settings
- The widget disappears immediately
Alternatively, drag the widget from the widget area back to the available widgets list.
Reordering Widgets
To change the order of widgets in an area:
- Click and drag widgets up or down within the same widget area
- Release when you're happy with the position
- Changes save automatically
