How We Plan Infrastructure Upgrades

SmartHost & Web604 min read·

This article explains how Web60 plans infrastructure upgrades and what you can expect during maintenance periods.

Planning Process

Web60 schedules infrastructure upgrades during low-traffic periods, typically between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM Irish Standard Time on weekdays. We analyse traffic patterns across all hosted websites to identify the quietest periods.

Upgrades fall into three categories:

  • Emergency security patches: Applied immediately when critical vulnerabilities are discovered
  • Scheduled maintenance: Planned server updates, hardware replacements, and software upgrades
  • Infrastructure expansion: Adding new servers or upgrading existing hardware to improve performance

Notification Timeline

You will receive advance notice of planned upgrades through email:

Major upgrades (more than 30 minutes downtime): 7 days advance notice Standard maintenance (less than 30 minutes): 48 hours advance notice Emergency security patches: As soon as possible, often during or immediately after implementation

Notifications include the expected duration, exact maintenance window, and any actions you need to take.

What Happens During Upgrades

During planned maintenance:

  • Your website may be temporarily unavailable
  • Email services continue to work normally
  • Automatic backups are created before any major changes
  • Our monitoring systems track the upgrade process in real-time

Most routine maintenance completes within 15-30 minutes. Hardware upgrades or major software changes may take 1-2 hours.

Minimising Disruption

Web60 uses several methods to reduce the impact of upgrades:

Rolling updates: Where possible, we upgrade servers in batches so some websites remain online Backup verification: All automatic backups are tested before maintenance begins Rollback procedures: If problems occur, we can quickly restore previous configurations 24/7 monitoring: Technical staff monitor all systems during and after upgrades

For more details about our server maintenance procedures, see How We Handle Server Maintenance.

After Upgrade Completion

Once maintenance finishes:

  • You receive a completion notification by email
  • All websites are tested automatically for basic functionality
  • Performance monitoring continues for 24 hours to detect any issues
  • Support staff are on standby to resolve any problems quickly

If you notice any issues after an upgrade, our technical team investigates immediately. Most problems are resolved within 1-2 hours of being reported.

FAQ

Q: Will I lose any website data during upgrades?

A: No. We create automatic backups before all maintenance and verify they work correctly. Your website data remains safe throughout the upgrade process.

Q: Can I request to skip a maintenance window?

A: Security patches cannot be delayed as they protect all websites. For scheduled maintenance, contact support to discuss your specific needs, though delays may not always be possible.

Q: What if my website doesn't work after an upgrade?

A: Contact support immediately through your Web60 portal. We monitor all websites after upgrades and can quickly resolve most issues or restore from backup if needed.

Q: Do upgrades affect my email?

A: Email services typically continue working during website maintenance. If email systems need upgrading, you'll receive separate notification with different maintenance windows.

Q: How often do infrastructure upgrades happen?

A: Routine maintenance happens monthly. Major infrastructure upgrades occur 2-3 times per year. Emergency security patches are applied as needed, usually within hours of release.

Q: Can I see what was changed during an upgrade?

A: Yes. Completion emails include a summary of changes made. For technical details about specific updates, contact support through your portal.

Q: What happens if an upgrade fails?

A: We have rollback procedures to restore previous configurations quickly. Failed upgrades are typically resolved within 1-2 hours, and affected customers are notified immediately.
