This article explains what happens to your website, domain name, and data if you cancel your Web60 plan.
Timeline after cancellation
When you cancel your plan, things happen in a specific order. Understanding this timeline helps you prepare and avoid losing anything important.
1. Website stays active until your paid period ends
After you cancel, your website remains live and accessible until the end of the current billing period. If you paid annually and cancel halfway through, your site continues running until the year is up.
2. Download your backup before deactivation
Before your billing period ends, download a full backup of your website:
- Log in to the Web60 portal.
- Go to Backups.
- Select the most recent backup.
- Click Download.
The download is a ZIP archive containing your WordPress files and a MySQL database dump (.sql file). With these two things, any WordPress hosting provider can restore your site.
3. Transfer your domain if needed
If Web60 registered a .ie domain for you, you can transfer it to another registrar:
- Go to Domain then Domain Settings in the portal.
- Remove the transfer lock.
- Request your authorisation code.
- Initiate the transfer at your new registrar.
Your domain remains registered for the duration you have already paid for, regardless of whether you cancel the hosting plan.
4. Site deactivated after billing period ends
Once your paid period ends, your website is taken offline. Visitors will no longer be able to access it.
5. Data retained for 30 days
After deactivation, Web60 retains your website data (files, database, and backups) for 30 days. During this window, you can contact support to reactivate your site if you change your mind.
6. Permanent deletion after 30 days
After the 30-day retention period, all data is permanently deleted. This includes your website files, database, and all backups. This cannot be undone.
Checklist before cancelling
Before you cancel, make sure you have:
- Downloaded a full backup (portal then Backups then Download)
- Transferred your domain to another registrar (if you want to keep it)
- Noted your DNS records, especially MX records for email
- Saved any SFTP files you need that are not in the backup
- Confirmed your email service will continue working (email DNS records need to be set up at your new DNS provider)
