This article explains how to fix media upload failures when adding images or files to your WordPress website.
Check Your File Size and Type
WordPress has limits on what files you can upload.
-
Check file size: Your images must be smaller than 32MB each. If your photo is larger, you need to resize it first using your phone's photo app or a free online tool.
-
Use supported file types: WordPress accepts JPG, PNG, GIF, and PDF files. It does not accept files like .exe, .zip, or unusual image formats.
-
Check your filename: Remove any special characters from your filename. Use only letters, numbers, and hyphens. Change "my photo!.jpg" to "my-photo.jpg".
Clear Your Browser and Try Again
Sometimes upload problems are caused by your web browser.
-
Refresh the page: Press Ctrl+F5 (or Cmd+R on Mac) to reload the page completely.
-
Clear your browser cache: In Chrome, press Ctrl+Shift+Delete, select "All time", and clear browsing data.
-
Try a different browser: If uploads still fail, try using Firefox or Edge instead.
-
Disable browser extensions: Ad blockers and security extensions can sometimes block uploads. Turn them off temporarily.
Use the WordPress Media Library
The drag-and-drop method doesn't always work. Try the standard upload method instead.
-
Go to your WordPress admin dashboard
-
Click Media in the left menu, then Add New
-
Click Select Files instead of dragging files
-
Choose your image and wait for it to upload completely
-
Once uploaded, you can add it to your pages
Check Available Storage Space
Your website has limited storage space. If it's full, uploads will fail.
-
In WordPress, go to Media → Library
-
Look at how many files you have uploaded
-
Delete any large files you no longer need
-
Empty your WordPress trash by clicking Trash and then Empty Trash
Try Uploading One File at a Time
Uploading multiple files together often causes problems.
-
Select only one image or file
-
Wait for it to upload completely before adding the next one
-
Don't close the upload window or navigate away during upload
If you're still having upload problems after trying these steps, contact Web60 support with details about the file you're trying to upload and any error messages you see.
FAQ
Q: Why does it say "HTTP error" when I upload images?
A: This usually means your file is too large or your internet connection is unstable. Try a smaller image or refresh the page and try again.
Q: Can I upload Word documents or PDF files?
A: Yes, you can upload PDF files directly. Word documents (.doc or .docx) are not supported - convert them to PDF first.
Q: My upload button is greyed out and won't work
A: This happens when your browser cache is causing problems. Clear your browser cache completely and try again in a new browser tab.
Q: How do I make my photos smaller for upload?
A: On your phone, use the built-in photo editor to resize images. On a computer, try free online tools or your computer's photo app to reduce the file size.
Q: What's the maximum file size I can upload?
A: Web60 allows files up to 32MB. Most website images should be much smaller (under 1MB) for better loading speed.
Q: Why do some of my images upload but others don't?
A: Different image formats and sizes can cause this. Check that failed uploads are JPG or PNG format and under 32MB in size.
