This article covers the most common reasons why your website won't load and how to fix them.
1. Check if the problem is just you
Before anything else, test if other people can see your website:
- Ask a friend or family member to visit your website
- Use a different device (phone, tablet, another computer)
- Try a different internet connection (mobile data instead of WiFi)
If others can see your website fine, the problem is likely with your internet connection or device. Contact your internet provider.
2. Clear your browser cache
Your browser stores old versions of websites. This can cause problems when changes are made:
- Chrome/Edge: Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete, select "All time", tick "Cached images and files", click Delete
- Safari: Go to Safari menu > Clear History, select "All History"
- Firefox: Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete, select "Everything", tick "Cache", click Clear Now
Try loading your website again.
3. Check your domain name
If you recently moved to Web60 or changed your domain settings, DNS (the system that connects your domain name to your website) might not be set up correctly.
Signs of DNS problems:
- "This site can't be reached" error
- "Server not found" message
- Website worked before but stopped after changing hosting
DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to work everywhere. If you made changes recently, wait and try again later.
4. Look for specific error messages
"SSL Certificate" or "Not Secure" warnings: Your website's security certificate may have expired or be misconfigured. This is common after moving hosting providers.
"500 Internal Server Error": There's a problem with your website's files or settings. This often happens after installing new plugins or themes.
"404 Not Found": The specific page doesn't exist, but your main website might still work. Check if your homepage loads.
"503 Service Unavailable": Your website is temporarily down for maintenance or experiencing high traffic.
5. Try loading different pages
If your homepage won't load, try:
- yourdomain.ie/wp-admin (WordPress login page)
- yourdomain.ie/contact or other pages you know exist
If some pages work but others don't, the problem is likely with specific pages rather than your entire website.
6. Check if it's a temporary issue
Sometimes servers need maintenance or experience brief outages. Wait 10-15 minutes and try again.
If you're still stuck after trying these steps, contact Web60 support with:
- Your domain name
- The exact error message you see
- When the problem started
- What you were doing when it stopped working
FAQ
Q: How long should I wait before contacting support?
A: Try the troubleshooting steps first. If your website has been down for more than 30 minutes and the steps above don't help, contact support.
Q: Will I lose my website content if there's a server problem?
A: No. Web60 keeps backups of your website. Your content and files are safe even during technical issues.
Q: My website loads very slowly but eventually works. Is this the same problem?
A: Slow loading is a different issue from not loading at all. Very slow websites might eventually show a timeout error, which would then follow these troubleshooting steps.
Q: I can see my old website but not the new changes I made. What's wrong?
A: This is usually a caching problem. Try the browser cache clearing steps in section 2. Changes can also take a few minutes to appear.
Q: My website worked yesterday but not today. What changed?
A: Common causes include expired SSL certificates, plugin updates that caused conflicts, or DNS changes. Follow the troubleshooting steps to identify the specific cause.
Q: Should I try to fix server errors myself?
A: No. Don't edit website files or settings unless you know exactly what you're doing. Contact support instead - they can fix server issues safely without risking your website.
