This article shows you how to fix speed issues that make your website load slowly for visitors.
Check Your Images First
Large images are the most common cause of slow websites. Images should be under 200KB each.
- Log into your WordPress admin dashboard
- Go to Media > Library
- Look for images larger than 200KB (the file size shows next to each image)
- For large images, click Edit and use the image editor to resize them
- Aim for images that are 1200 pixels wide maximum
If you need help with image management, see our guide on adding images and media.
Test Your Plugins
Too many plugins or poorly coded plugins slow down your website.
- In WordPress admin, go to Plugins > Installed Plugins
- Count how many plugins you have active - more than 20 plugins often causes speed issues
- Deactivate plugins you don't actually use by clicking Deactivate
- For plugins you need, deactivate them one by one and test your website speed after each one
- If your site speeds up after deactivating a specific plugin, that plugin was causing the problem
Never delete plugins completely until you're sure you don't need them. Deactivating is safer.
Check Your Theme
Some WordPress themes are built poorly and load slowly no matter what you do.
- Go to Appearance > Themes
- Temporarily switch to a basic theme like Twenty Twenty-Four
- Visit your website and see if it loads faster
- If it does load faster, your original theme was the problem
You can learn more about changing themes in our WordPress themes installation guide.
Clear Your Cache
Web60 automatically caches your website, but sometimes old cached files cause speed problems.
- Log into your Web60 portal
- Find your website and click Manage
- Look for Cache Settings or Performance Settings
- Click "Clear Cache" or "Purge Cache"
- Wait 5 minutes then test your website speed again
Check for Database Issues
WordPress stores your content in a database. Over time, this database can become cluttered and slow.
- In WordPress admin, go to Tools
- Look for any database optimization plugins you might have installed
- If you don't have one, this requires technical knowledge - contact support instead
- Never attempt database changes unless you understand what you're doing
Test Your Website Speed
To properly measure if your fixes worked:
- Visit gtmetrix.com or tools.pingdom.com
- Enter your website address
- Wait for the test to complete
- Look for the "Page Load Time" - under 3 seconds is good, under 2 seconds is excellent
- Test from different locations if the tool offers this option
If you're still stuck after trying these steps, contact Web60 support. Include the results from your speed test and tell us which steps you've already tried.
