Why your domain change takes up to 48 hours

Domain Management2 min read·

When you change where your domain name points, the update does not happen instantly. This page explains why and what you can expect while you wait.

What is happening behind the scenes

The internet is made up of millions of computers all around the world. When you change your domain settings, that information needs to spread from your domain provider to all of these computers. This process is called propagation.

Think of it like changing your business address. It takes time for the phone book, Google Maps, and your suppliers to all update their records. The internet works in a similar way.

How long does it take?

  • Most domain changes take effect within 1 to 4 hours.
  • In some cases, it can take up to 48 hours.
  • The exact timing depends on your domain provider and how quickly internet servers around the world update their records.

What to do while waiting

  • Be patient. This is completely normal and there is nothing wrong with your website.
  • Do not make additional changes. Changing your domain settings again while waiting can cause delays or confusion. Leave everything as it is.
  • Your temporary address still works. While your custom domain is connecting, your website remains fully available at its smartsitebuilder.ie address. You can continue building and editing your site as normal.

How to check if your domain is working

The simplest way is to type your custom domain name into your browser and see if your website appears. You can also check your Web60 dashboard. When the domain is connected, the badge next to your domain name will change from Temporary (amber) to Live (green).

Tip: If your domain seems to work on your phone but not your computer (or the other way around), this is normal. Different devices and networks update at different speeds.

Yes. Your temporary smartsitebuilder.ie address continues to work while your custom domain is connecting.

How do I know when DNS propagation is finished?

Type your custom domain into your browser and see if your website appears. You can also check your Web60 dashboard where the domain badge will change from Temporary to Live once it is fully connected.
