Understanding Domain Transfer Processes

Domain Management4 min read·

This article explains how to transfer your existing domain name to Web60 and what to expect during the process.

Before You Start the Transfer

You need three things before transferring your domain:

  1. Authorization code (EPP code) - Request this from your current domain provider
  2. Administrative access - You must be listed as the domain owner or have permission to transfer
  3. Domain age - Your domain must be at least 60 days old and not transferred within the last 60 days

Check that your domain is not locked. Contact your current provider to unlock it if needed. Also ensure your contact details are up to date, as you'll receive confirmation emails during the transfer.

Step 1: Get Your Authorization Code

Log into your current domain provider's control panel. Look for "Domain Management" or "My Domains". Find the option to "Get Auth Code", "Get EPP Code", or "Transfer Code". Each provider names this differently.

Some providers email you the code, others display it on screen. Write down this code - you'll need it later. The code usually contains letters and numbers and looks like "Xy9#mK2pQ8".

Step 2: Start the Transfer Process

From your Web60 control panel, navigate to Domain Management. Select "Transfer Domain" and enter your domain name. You'll be asked for the authorization code from Step 1.

Enter your contact details exactly as they appear with your current provider. Any differences can delay the transfer. Double-check your email address - this is where transfer confirmations will be sent.

Step 3: Confirm the Transfer

You'll receive an email asking you to confirm the transfer. This email comes from your current provider, not Web60. Click the confirmation link within 5 days, or the transfer will be cancelled.

Your current provider may also send an email asking if you want to cancel the transfer. Ignore this email if you want the transfer to proceed. They may also call you - confirm that yes, you want to transfer your domain.

What Happens During the Transfer

The transfer takes 5-7 days to complete. During this time:

  • Your website stays online
  • Your email continues working
  • You cannot make changes to DNS settings
  • The domain cannot be transferred elsewhere

You'll receive email updates about the transfer progress. Don't worry if you don't hear anything for a few days - this is normal.

After the Transfer Completes

Once complete, your domain will appear in your Web60 control panel under Domain Management. You can now update domain nameservers to point to Web60's servers.

If you're also moving your website, follow our guide on connecting your custom domain to Web60 to complete the setup.

Your domain registration will be extended by one year as part of the transfer process. You'll see the new expiry date in your Web60 control panel.

If you're still stuck, contact our support team with your domain name and current provider details. We can check the transfer status and help resolve any issues.
