How to Update Domain Nameservers

Domain Management3 min read·

This article explains how to update your domain nameservers to point your domain to Web60 hosting.

Nameservers tell the internet where to find your website. When you change nameservers, you're directing your domain to use Web60's servers instead of your previous hosting provider.

Step 1: Get Your Web60 Nameservers

Log into your Web60 portal and find your nameserver details. You'll need these two addresses:

  • ns1.web60.ie
  • ns2.web60.ie

Write these down or keep this page open.

Step 2: Log Into Your Domain Registrar

A domain registrar is the company where you bought your domain name (like Blacknight, Register365, or GoDaddy). Log into your account with them.

If you can't remember which company you used, search your email for your domain name and look for registration or renewal emails.

Step 3: Find the Domain Management Section

Look for sections called "Domain Management", "DNS Management", "Nameservers", or "Domain Settings". Each registrar organises this differently.

Find your specific domain in the list and click to manage it.

Step 4: Change the Nameservers

Look for a section called "Nameservers", "DNS", or "Name Servers". You'll see the current nameservers listed.

Click "Edit" or "Change" next to the nameserver settings.

Delete the existing nameservers and enter:

  • ns1.web60.ie
  • ns2.web60.ie

Save the changes.

Step 5: Wait for Changes to Take Effect

Nameserver changes can take up to 48 hours to work fully across the internet. Most changes happen within 2-6 hours.

During this time, some visitors might see your old website while others see your new Web60 site.

Step 6: Verify the Change

After a few hours, visit your domain name in a web browser. If you see your Web60 website, the change worked.

If you're still seeing your old website after 48 hours, check that you entered the nameservers correctly or contact your domain registrar.

If you're still stuck, contact Web60 support with your domain name and we'll help you get it sorted.

FAQ

Q: Will changing nameservers break my email?

A: If your email is hosted elsewhere (like Gmail or your old hosting company), changing nameservers might affect it. You may need to update email settings after the change.

Q: How long do nameserver changes take?

A: Usually 2-6 hours, but can take up to 48 hours to work completely across all internet providers.

Q: Can I change nameservers back if something goes wrong?

A: Yes. You can always change them back to the old ones using the same steps, but you'll need to wait another 2-48 hours for changes to take effect.

Q: What if I can't find nameserver settings in my registrar account?

A: Contact your domain registrar's support team. They can help you find the right section or change the nameservers for you.

Q: Do I need to change anything in my Web60 account after updating nameservers?

A: No. Once your nameservers are updated, Web60 will automatically handle your domain connection.

Q: What's the difference between nameservers and DNS records?

A: Nameservers tell the internet which company manages your domain's settings. DNS records are the specific settings that control where your website and email are hosted.
