How to connect to your site using FileZilla

Files & SFTP4 min read·

FileZilla is a free, easy-to-use program that lets you transfer files between your computer and your website using SFTP. This guide shows you how to download FileZilla, connect it to your Web60 site, and start transferring files.

Download and install FileZilla

  1. Go to filezilla-project.org
  2. Download the FileZilla Client (not the Server version)
  3. Install it on your computer — the installation is straightforward and works on Windows, Mac, and Linux

Get your SFTP credentials

Before connecting, you need your SFTP credentials from your Web60 dashboard. If you have not enabled SFTP yet, follow our guide on how to enable SFTP access first.

You will need four pieces of information:

  • Host — shown on the SFTP page in your dashboard
  • Username — shown on the SFTP page in your dashboard
  • Password — the password you generated from your dashboard
  • Port — shown on the SFTP page in your dashboard (important: use the exact number shown, as it may not be the standard default)

Connecting to your website

1. Open FileZilla

Launch FileZilla on your computer. You will see the main window with a toolbar at the top and two panels below.

2. Enter your connection details

At the top of the FileZilla window, you will see four fields:

  • Host — enter the host address from your Web60 dashboard
  • Username — enter your SFTP username
  • Password — enter the password you generated
  • Port — enter the port number from your dashboard

3. Click Quickconnect

Click the Quickconnect button. FileZilla will attempt to connect to your website.

4. Accept the certificate warning

The first time you connect, FileZilla may show a security certificate warning. This is normal. Tick the box to always trust this certificate and click OK to continue.

5. You are connected

Once connected, you will see your website files appear in the right-hand panel of FileZilla.

Understanding the FileZilla layout

FileZilla is split into two main panels:

  • Left panel — these are the files on your computer
  • Right panel — these are the files on your website

You transfer files by dragging them from one panel to the other.

At the bottom of the window, you will see a transfer queue showing the progress of any files being uploaded or downloaded.

Finding your website files

After connecting, you will see several folders on the right-hand panel. Your website files are inside the htdocs/ folder. Double-click on it to open it.

Inside htdocs/, you will find the standard WordPress file structure. The most important folder is wp-content/, which contains:

  • themes/ — your website themes
  • plugins/ — your installed plugins
  • uploads/ — your images and media files

Uploading files

To upload a file from your computer to your website:

  1. In the left panel, navigate to the file or folder on your computer
  2. In the right panel, navigate to where you want to put the file on your website
  3. Drag the file from left to right

The file will begin uploading. You can see the progress in the transfer queue at the bottom.

Downloading files

To download a file from your website to your computer:

  1. In the right panel, find the file on your website
  2. In the left panel, navigate to where you want to save it on your computer
  3. Drag the file from right to left

Important tips

  • Only work inside wp-content/ — do not modify or delete any files outside the wp-content folder unless you know exactly what you are doing. Files outside this folder are part of WordPress itself.
  • Always back up first — before making any file changes, create a backup from your Web60 dashboard.
  • Save your connection — FileZilla remembers recent connections in the Quickconnect dropdown, so you do not need to type your details every time.

Frequently asked questions

Is FileZilla safe to use?

Yes. FileZilla is a well-established, open-source program used by millions of people worldwide. When you connect using SFTP, all your data is encrypted. Just make sure to download FileZilla from the official website at filezilla-project.org to avoid fake copies.

What do I do if FileZilla says connection refused?

First, double-check that you are using the correct Host, Port, Username, and Password from your Web60 dashboard. Make sure you are using the port number shown in your dashboard, as it may not be the standard default. If SFTP was recently enabled, confirm that the 24-hour activation period has passed.

Where are my website files in FileZilla?

After connecting, your website files are in the htdocs/ folder on the right-hand panel. This is where WordPress is installed and where all your site content lives. Navigate into htdocs/ to see your WordPress files.
