How to push staging changes to your live site

Staging3 min read·

Once you have made and tested changes on your staging site, pushing them to live is straightforward. This replaces your current live site with the staging version, so all your changes go live at once.

Before you push

Take a moment to review your staging site thoroughly before pushing to live:

  • Check every page — visit each page on your staging site and make sure everything looks correct
  • Test any forms — submit test entries through your contact forms to make sure they still work
  • Check on mobile — open your staging site on your phone to verify the mobile layout
  • Review any new plugins — make sure newly installed plugins are working as expected

Once you are confident everything is right, you are ready to push.

How to push staging to live

1. Open your Web60 dashboard

Sign in to your Web60 dashboard and click on your site name.

2. Go to the Staging section

Click Staging in the left sidebar.

3. Click Push to Live

Click the Push to Live button. A confirmation dialog will appear.

4. Type the confirmation phrase

To prevent accidental pushes, you will be asked to type a confirmation phrase shown on screen. This is an important safety measure — pushing replaces everything on your live site, so Web60 makes sure you intend to do it.

5. Web60 creates a backup automatically

Before the push begins, Web60 automatically creates a complete backup of your current live site. This means you can always go back if something is not right.

6. Your live site is updated

Web60 replaces your live site with the staging version. All files and the entire database from staging are copied to your live site. This usually takes a few minutes.

After pushing

Once the push is complete:

  1. Visit your live site and check that everything looks correct
  2. Test key pages — homepage, contact page, and any pages you changed
  3. Test forms and functionality — make sure everything still works as expected
  4. Check on mobile — verify the layout looks good on a phone

If something is wrong

If you notice any problems after pushing to live, you can restore the automatic pre-push backup:

  1. Go to your Web60 dashboard
  2. Click your site name
  3. Click Backups in the left sidebar
  4. Find the backup that was created just before the push (it will have a recent timestamp)
  5. Click Restore to roll your live site back to how it was before

This gives you a complete safety net.

Important things to know

  • Pushing replaces everything — all files and the entire database on your live site are replaced with the staging version. Any changes made on your live site since you created the staging copy will be overwritten.
  • New content on live — if customers have submitted forms or placed orders on your live site since you created staging, those submissions will not be on the staging copy. Consider syncing live to staging first if your live site has had significant activity.
  • Your staging site remains — after pushing, your staging site still exists. You can continue to use it for future testing.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose anything on my live site when I push?

Pushing replaces everything on your live site with the staging version — all files and the entire database. However, Web60 automatically creates a backup of your live site before the push, so you can restore it if needed.

Can I undo a push to live?

Yes. Web60 creates an automatic backup of your live site just before the push happens. If something is not right after pushing, go to the Backups section in your dashboard and restore that pre-push backup.

How long does pushing to live take?

It usually takes a few minutes, depending on the size of your site. During the push, your live site may be briefly unavailable. For most sites, the process is quick.
