One of the most common questions we hear is whether backups take up space on your website. The short answer is no, and this guide explains why.
Backups do not count towards your site's space
Your website backups are stored separately from your website itself. They live on secure backup servers, not on the same space your website uses. This means:
- Backups will never slow down your website
- Backups do not reduce the storage available for your site
- You do not need to delete backups to free up space
How big are backups?
The size of each backup depends on your website, specifically how many pages you have and how many images you have uploaded. For a typical small business website, each backup is usually a few hundred megabytes. That is roughly the size of a handful of photos from your phone.
You can see the exact size of each backup in the Backup History table on your Backups page. For more on this, see our guide on viewing your backups.
What makes backups larger?
A few things can increase the size of your backups:
- More images. If you upload a lot of high-resolution photos, each backup will be larger.
- More pages. A site with 50 pages will have bigger backups than one with 5 pages.
- Uploaded files. Any documents, PDFs, or other files you add to your site are included.
For most small business websites, backup size is nothing to worry about.
Do manual backups take up extra space?
Manual backups are stored alongside your automatic backups. While they do take up space on our backup servers, this does not affect your website's performance or storage. You can delete manual backups from the Backup History table if you no longer need them.
