How to preview your website before publishing

Building Your Website1 min read·

Before you publish changes to your website, you can preview how they will look to visitors.

How to preview a page

  1. Open the page you are editing in the WordPress editor.
  2. Click the Preview button in the top right (next to Update/Publish).
  3. Choose how you want to preview:
    • Desktop — full-width browser view
    • Tablet — medium screen size
    • Mobile — narrow phone-sized view
  4. Click Preview in new tab to see the full preview in a separate browser tab.

What the preview shows

The preview displays your page exactly as visitors will see it, including:

  • All text and image changes you have made
  • Layout and spacing
  • Colours and fonts
  • How the page looks on different screen sizes

Tips

  • Always preview on mobile. Over half of website visitors use their phone — make sure your site looks good on a small screen.
  • Check that all links work by clicking through them in the preview.
  • If something does not look right in the preview, go back to the editor and adjust before publishing.
  • Remember: the preview is private. Only you can see it.

Frequently asked questions

Can other people see my preview?

No. The preview is only visible to you while you are logged into the WordPress editor. Visitors see the published version.

Do I have to preview before publishing?

No, but it is a good idea. Previewing lets you catch mistakes before they go live.
