Managing API Access Keys

Billing & Account4 min read·

This article explains how to create, manage, and secure API access keys for your Web60 account.

API access keys are special passwords that allow other software tools to connect to your Web60 account automatically. You might need these keys to connect backup services, monitoring tools, or website management software to your Web60 account.

Creating a New API Key

  1. Log into your Web60 portal at portal.web60.ie
  2. Click on "Account Settings" in the main menu
  3. Select "API Access" from the left sidebar
  4. Click the "Generate New API Key" button
  5. Give your key a name that describes what you'll use it for (like "Backup Tool" or "Monitoring Service")
  6. Choose the permissions level:
    • Read Only: Can view information but cannot make changes
    • Read/Write: Can view and modify your account settings
    • Full Access: Complete control over your account (use with caution)
  7. Click "Create Key"
  8. Copy the key immediately and store it safely - you won't be able to see it again

Managing Your Existing API Keys

To view your current API keys:

  1. Go to Account Settings > API Access in your Web60 portal
  2. You'll see a list of all your active keys with their names and creation dates
  3. Keys will show as "Active" or "Inactive"

Disabling an API Key

If you no longer need a key or suspect it's been compromised:

  1. Find the key in your API Access list
  2. Click "Disable" next to the key name
  3. The key will stop working immediately
  4. You can re-enable it later by clicking "Enable"

Deleting an API Key

To permanently remove a key:

  1. Click "Delete" next to the key name
  2. Confirm the deletion
  3. The key cannot be recovered once deleted

Security Best Practices

Never share your API keys publicly. Treat them like passwords - anyone with your key can access your Web60 account.

Use specific permissions. If a tool only needs to read information, create a "Read Only" key instead of giving full access.

Regular key rotation. Delete old keys you're not using and create new ones for long-term services every few months.

Monitor key usage. Check your API Access page regularly to see which keys are active.

Troubleshooting API Key Issues

If your API key isn't working:

  • Check that the key is still "Active" in your Web60 portal
  • Verify you're using the correct permissions level for what you're trying to do
  • Make sure you copied the entire key without extra spaces
  • Check that the third-party service is configured correctly

If you're still stuck, contact Web60 support through your portal or email hello@web60.ie with details about which service you're trying to connect.
