Using the DNS Checker Tool

Domain Management3 min read·

This article explains how to use Web60's DNS checker tool to look up DNS records for any domain.

What the DNS Checker Does

The DNS checker at web60.ie/tools/dns-checker lets you look up specific DNS records for any domain name. It can check A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT and SOA record types using Cloudflare's secure DNS-over-HTTPS service.

This tool is different from the DNS health report. The DNS checker looks up specific records you choose. The DNS health report runs a full audit of all your domain's DNS records with a score.

How to Use the DNS Checker

  1. Go to the tool: Visit web60.ie/tools/dns-checker in your web browser

  2. Enter the domain: Type the domain name you want to check. Do not include "http://" or "www" unless you specifically want to check a subdomain

  3. Choose the record type: Select from the dropdown menu:

    • A record: Shows which IP address the domain points to
    • AAAA record: Shows IPv6 address (less common)
    • CNAME record: Shows if the domain redirects to another domain
    • MX record: Shows mail server settings for email
    • NS record: Shows which nameservers control the domain
    • TXT record: Shows text records including SPF, DKIM and other settings
    • SOA record: Shows technical DNS zone information
  4. Click "Check DNS": The tool will query the DNS system and show results within a few seconds

Common Uses

Check if your domain points to the right place: Use A record lookup to see if your domain points to your Web60 hosting IP address after connecting your domain.

Verify email settings: After setting up email, use MX record lookup to confirm your mail server settings are correct.

Check SPF records: Use TXT record lookup with your domain name to see if your SPF record for email security is set up correctly.

Check DMARC records: Use TXT record lookup but enter "_dmarc.yourdomain.com" (replace with your actual domain) to check DMARC email security settings.

See current nameservers: Use NS record lookup to check which nameservers currently control your domain.

Understanding the Results

The results show what the DNS system currently sees for your domain. If you recently made DNS changes, they might not show up immediately because DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to spread worldwide (called DNS propagation).

If your results look wrong, wait a few hours and check again. Recent changes may still be updating across the internet.

The tool queries Cloudflare's public DNS servers, which are fast and reliable. Different DNS servers around the world might show slightly different results during the propagation period.

If you're still stuck or the DNS checker shows unexpected results, contact Web60 support for help diagnosing DNS issues.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't my DNS changes show up in the checker?

DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate worldwide. Wait a few hours and check again.

What's the difference between the DNS checker and DNS health report?

The DNS checker looks up specific records you choose. The DNS health report audits all your domain's DNS records and gives a score.

How do I check DMARC records?

Select TXT record type and enter "_dmarc.yourdomain.com" as the domain name (replace yourdomain.com with your actual domain).

Which record type should I use to check if my domain points to Web60?

Use the A record type with your domain name. It should show your Web60 hosting IP address.

Can I check DNS records for domains I don't own?

Yes, the DNS checker can look up public DNS records for any domain on the internet.

What does "no records found" mean?

Either the domain doesn't exist, doesn't have that type of record set up, or you may have entered the domain name incorrectly.
