My DNS changes are not updating

Troubleshooting3 min read·

If you have changed your domain settings and your website still is not showing up at your custom address, here is what to check. DNS changes (the system that connects your domain name to your website) can take time to spread across the internet, so patience is often the first step.

Step 1: Wait at least 4 hours

DNS changes do not happen instantly. When you update your domain settings, those changes need to spread across the internet. This process can take anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours.

If you made your changes less than 4 hours ago, give it more time before troubleshooting further.

Step 2: Double-check your settings at your domain provider

Sign in to the company where you bought your domain name (your domain provider) and check that your settings are correct.

If you are using nameservers (the recommended method), make sure they are set to:

  • ns1.smarthost.ie
  • ns2.smarthost.ie

If you are using an A record instead, make sure it points to:

  • 80.93.24.138

Common mistakes to watch for:

  • Extra spaces before or after the nameserver addresses.
  • Typing errors in the nameserver names.
  • Setting only one nameserver instead of both.
  • Forgetting to save the changes.

Step 3: Attach the domain in your Web60 dashboard

Changing your DNS settings is only half the job. You also need to tell your Web60 website to expect traffic from your custom domain.

  1. Sign in to your Web60 dashboard at app.web60.ie/login.
  2. Go to the Domain section.
  3. Make sure your custom domain is entered and attached to your website.

If the domain is not listed there, add it and save.

Step 4: Clear your browser cache and try incognito

Your browser may be showing you an old version of the page. Try the following:

  • Clear your browser cache (in your browser's settings, look for an option to clear browsing data).
  • Open a private or incognito window and type your domain address there.

This ensures you are seeing the latest version of your website and not a stored copy.

Step 5: Wait the full 48 hours

If everything looks correct in your settings but your domain still is not working, the most likely explanation is that the changes have not fully spread yet. This is normal and nothing to worry about.

Wait the full 48 hours from when you made the changes before contacting support.

Step 6: Contact support

If 48 hours have passed and your domain is still not connecting to your Web60 website, get in touch with us. We will check your settings and help you get connected.

When you contact us, it helps if you can tell us:

  • Your domain name
  • Where you bought the domain (which provider)
  • When you made the DNS changes

Need help?

If your domain is still not working after 48 hours, visit our support page and we will take a look for you.

Frequently asked questions

How long do DNS changes take to work?

DNS changes can take anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours to take effect. Most changes complete within 4 to 6 hours, but it is best to allow up to 48 hours before assuming there is a problem.

Where do I change my DNS settings?

You change your DNS settings at the company where you bought your domain name (your domain provider). Log in to your account there and look for DNS settings or nameserver settings.

Can I still use my website while DNS changes are in progress?

Yes. Your temporary smartsitebuilder.ie address continues to work normally while you wait for DNS changes to take effect, so your site is never offline during the process.
