If your website is taking a long time to load, there are several things you can do to speed it up. Work through these steps from top to bottom.
Step 1: Clear your site's cache
Your website stores temporary copies of its pages so they load faster for visitors. Sometimes this cache becomes outdated and actually slows things down. Clearing it forces your website to rebuild everything fresh.
- Sign in to your Web60 dashboard at app.web60.ie/login.
- Click My Website in the sidebar.
- Click the option to Clear Cache.
- Wait a minute or two, then try loading your website again.
Step 2: Check your images
Large images are one of the most common reasons a website loads slowly. Every image on your website needs to be downloaded by your visitor's browser, and very large files take a long time.
Here is what to aim for:
- Keep each image under 2 MB in file size.
- Photos do not need to be huge. For most websites, 1200 pixels wide is plenty.
- Use JPEG format for photographs and PNG for logos or graphics with transparent backgrounds.
How to resize images:
If you are not sure how to make your images smaller, there are free online tools that can help (search for "resize image online"). You can also contact our support team and we will help you optimise your images.
Step 3: Deactivate plugins you are not using
Every plugin on your website uses resources, even if you are not actively using it. If you have plugins installed that you no longer need, deactivating them can help speed things up.
- Sign in to your Web60 dashboard and click Open WordPress from the My Website section.
- Go to Plugins in the sidebar.
- Look for any plugins you are not using.
- Click Deactivate on plugins you do not need.
If you are not sure which plugins are safe to deactivate, contact our support team before making changes.
Step 4: Check your visitor stats
Unusual spikes in traffic can temporarily slow down any website. Check your visitor statistics in your Web60 dashboard to see if there has been a sudden increase in visitors.
If your site is experiencing more traffic than usual, this may be temporary. If it continues, contact support and we can look at options to handle the increased traffic.
Step 5: Keep your plugins up to date
Outdated plugins can cause performance problems. When plugin updates are available, they often include speed improvements and fixes.
- Open your WordPress editor through your Web60 dashboard.
- Go to Plugins and check for any available updates.
- Click Update on any plugins that have updates available.
Tip: It is a good idea to check for plugin updates at least once a month.
Step 6: Contact support
If you have tried all the steps above and your website is still slow, get in touch with us. We can investigate further and look at what might be causing the issue.
When you contact us, it helps if you can tell us:
- How long the problem has been happening
- Whether specific pages are slow, or the whole site
- Whether you have made any recent changes

Frequently asked questions
How do I clear my site's cache?
Sign in to your Web60 dashboard, click My Website in the sidebar, and look for the Clear Cache option. Clearing the cache removes old temporary files and forces your website to rebuild its pages fresh.
How big should my images be for my website?
Try to keep each image under 2 MB in file size. Very large images are one of the most common causes of slow websites. You can resize images using free online tools before uploading them, or ask our support team for help.
Is my website slow for everyone or just me?
It could be either. Try loading your website on a different device or ask a friend to check it. If it loads quickly for them, the issue may be with your own internet connection rather than your website.
